In 2014, The Carolina Cup is pleased to raise funds for and support Ocean of Hope. A portion of every registration fee will be donated to Ocean of Hope, and on Sunday, April 27, 2014, there will be a charity paddle-a relaxed paddle around Harbor Island-starting at 8am.
The Ocean of Hope (O2H) team is a group of paddleboarders and outrigger canoe paddlers who raise money for The Sarcoma Alliance. We have team members who train and race all year as O2H team members; we are affiliated with three races in California as the title non-profit: The Cold Hands Paddle, The Rock 2 Rock Paddleboard Race and the Catalina Classic. We are also part of the Paddle For Humanity Race series, and the Jay Race in Santa Cruz, CA. Our current sponsors- Joe Bark, Zico Coconut Water, Patagonia, LifeFactory, Kona, Vestal- help support our athletes with team gear and raffle prizes at race venues.
O2H began with one paddle boarder in 1999 and has grown to include paddling events, prone and SUP paddleboarders, outrigger paddling teams, and other athletes who dedicate their own personal challenge or event to help those that are fighting cancer. O2H is “dedicated to the sea of people affected by cancer”. We are proud that O2H remains a grassroots fundraising organization that exists solely to raise money for the Sarcoma Alliance; and we are proud of what we have accomplished. Since 1999, O2H has raised more than $600,000 and we are still going strong!
All of the funds we raise go to fund second opinion grants for patients who have been diagnosed with sarcoma cancer, what some may call a rare cancer. These grants literally save lives because treatment from a specialist is paramount in diagnosing and treating a cancer patient. Because sarcomas are often misdiagnosed or caught too late, these cancer patients typically end up as amputees or dying way too soon. Unfortunately 1/4 of these sarcoma cancers are found in children and adolescence. So we are really proud of the work we have done to raise money and awareness. You’d be surprised when you start talking about sarcomas how many people you suddenly hear that have had a family member, friend or loved one who has had it. Not so rare at all.
